August marks the return to school for millions of students across America! Creating a noticeable increase in traffic, pedestrians, bicycles, and school buses.
According to NHTSA, school-transportation-related crashes average more than 100 fatalities per year, and many of these incidents occur when children are walking near roadways or bus stops.
As we adjust to back-to-school traffic, keep safety in the forefront of your mind! Take the time to have a conversation with your children about school safety and make sure they know walking and bus-stop safety rules!
All commuters can help by driving carefully. That means, Slow down in school zones, eliminate distractions, and always stop for school buses displaying flashing red lights and stop arms.
A few extra seconds of caution can prevent a life-changing incident and helps ensure that every child makes it to school and back unharmed!

For Commuters
Expect heavier traffic near schools, neighborhoods, and bus stops
Slow down and obey school zone speed limits
Eliminate distractions, especially cell phone use
Never pass a stopped school bus with flashing red lights and an extended stop arm
Look twice for children on bicycles and pedestrians who may enter roadways unexpectedly
For Working Parents
Plan extra travel time to avoid rushing
Review walking and bus stop safety rules with children
Ensure children arrive at bus stops early and remain at least 10 feet from the curb
Establish safe pick-up and drop-off locations away from traffic congestion

Leave earlier to reduce speeding and aggressive driving
